THE CASTLE
A TRAVEL IN TIME BETWEEN HISTORY AND ARCHITECTURE
Castello di Novello is much more than an historical building. It is a treasure chest, preserving centuries of history, local traditions and unique architectural features. Every single stone tells of a noble past, every room is full of the 19th century charm and every vantage offers breathtaking views of the Langhe, a land of culture and wine.
The ancient origins of the region
Novello derives from the original Roman ‘Novellum Albesium Pompeianorum’. Named by the patricians of Alba Pompeia (Alba) who built their summer villas on the hill-top location to take advantage of the favourable climate.
From ruins to a 19th century dream
In the late 19th century, noblewoman Maria Allara Nigra decided to bring the ancient medieval castle of Novello back to life. She commissioned the architect G.B. Schellino, an exponent of Piemontese eclecticism, who transformed the ruins into a fairytale castle, drawing on Gothic, Moorish, and neo-medieval references.
The result was a unique noble residence, conceived as a symbol of the village and still captivating today.
Enchanting architecture
Completely restored, Castello di Novello retains its historic soul with crenellated towers, terracotta decorations and frescoed vaults which blend harmoniously with the Langhe landscape.
The interiors tell the story of a noble past with fireplaces, original stucco and tapestries. Whilst the scenic gardens overlook some of the most beautiful views in Piemonte.
